automotive starting tools?
I am going to start doing an apprenticeship for automotive tech work, like a standard mechanic does and i need to know what some good starter tools would be because i need to know because i can't just walk in there with no tools or at least crappy ones. So far I have: Rotary tools, an electric drill, some wrenches and sockets, punches and chissle's, ratchets, a small air compressor and a small crappy tool box with 3 small drawers and the top storage place, and a screw driver set, oh and alot of allan keys. Specific answers are very appreciated. thank you.
Sounds like the tools you have are pretty good start, -- the "crappy toolbox" does nothing but sit on your bench or tool cart! When I started working in garage, - I had about what you had, and had been doing my owm mechanic work for a number of years, - but as I got "broke in", I discovered which tools I really should have, and which ones look great, but are of no value, becasue you never use them! If you keep your eyes open, you might be able to buy an adequate tool box (for the time being) used from somebody that is moving up, or quitting! One of those cheap roll-around bottoms from sears (around $65-80 on sale) will be fine for your toolbox to sit on, and it has a drawer for some stuff, - plus a "junk area" to store your bigger stuff in. You can leave the door in, but not fully seated so that the upper drawer will open, and people won't see the hidden "mess" most of the time! And for a few more bucks you can get one with 3-4 drawers too! I had my "big toolbox" sitting on my workbench, and put a piece of 3/4 inch plywood on top of the roll-around box. Had 3 drawer cabinet, and had 1/4 inch plywood in botoms of the drawers with cleats tacked on so that all the wrenches were in order and I could very easily see if any were missing. In addition to that the people see all your tools "lined up like soldiers" and are impressed! I used the wood top for my "mobile work surface" right there beside the car!
Specialized tools are generally provided if you go to work for a car dealer, -- there are always special tools that "normal people" can't get ahold of, -- they are generally displayed on a toolboard somewhere in the shop,-- also generally put where the customer can see it so that they can be impressed about how well your shop is supplied with the tools to "do the job right"!
After you have worked a couple years and know exactly what you need, you can buy one of those 1000# roll-around toolboxes with a "hammer for every job" inside, -- but it is only impressive, - you will only use part of them and look at the rest! Iin the meantime pick up misc tools you do need at pawnshops or garage sales somewhere... you can come up with good stuf for about 1/4 or less than buying new.. The most important thing is to keep them clean and in good useable shape, -- if they all match that's fine but doesn't do the work any better! When you finally break loose and spend a couple thousand for new boxes and tools, you can take the ones you already have home and work with them there, - (also useful for quick replacement when you loose or break a tool at work)..
