Is it possible to have a Plan B that helps you to survive without electricity?
It must be low cost and support you for at least 6 months. My question is borne out of our complete over reliance on a power source we have no control over- other than buying a generator which is out of most people's budget.
Its very possible but to do it effectively you must have your plan B partially implemented while plan A is in action.
It would be very hard in my mind to survive like this in a city though. I live out in the country and think it wouldn't be too bad here, more like a big inconvenience.
For a food source you would just have to do it like in the old days and live off the land. That involves growing your own produce and hunting for meat. Growing your own produce is the part that you really need to be practicing at this time to be able to continue to support yourself when times got tough. These things won't grow overnight, so when it hits the fan you can't start planting seed and expect to do well.
Ideally you would need to have enough land to grow a good sized garden and learn to can or preserve what you don't eat.
For meat you've got to be able to eat it or preserve it. A large animal will quickly go to waste if you don't preserve it in some way as you can only eat so much of it. You can get around this by eating smaller animals like rabbits and squirrels. But for larger game like deer you can eat what you can but the rest should be made into jerky or canned.
To be able to preserve a large amount of meat you must have or be able to get large amounts of salt for curing.
If you get fortunate enough to get into a large community where everyone cooperates (good luck on finding something like that these days!) large game can be more easily handled as everyone can eat an entire deer in one day.
For heat and cooking in a home a wood burning stove would be ideal. As such you would need access to a good amount of wood for burning.
You would also need firearms, at minimum a shotgun, rifle, handgun and a small rifle like a .22. You also need lots of ammo.
You can harvest various game birds with the shotgun and small game with the shotgun or .22, large game with a rifle and lets face it you'll want some handguns to be able to defend yourself. If it hits the fan and you're the only one being able to feed yourself the world will beat a pathway to your door.
You also need tools to work the garden or for any other chores that are around.
You've got to think about your water source as well as waste disposal. Water from a spring can be used but know how to capture and filter water if needed. Be able to build an outhouse and start a compost heap to deal with waste.
A big thing is also remembering to keep everything you have and do as quiet and low key as possible. You don't want to advertise the fact that you can feed yourself.
I know this is a little drawn out, but surviving without electricity for 6 months would be a lot more challenging than most would think.
The big thing in my mind is keeping other people from taking the stuff you already have. If you can get around that the rest can be done. Its nothing that hasn't been done before, except back then they didn't have all these other people trying to steal all your food.
