internal P & T for compressors?
Hello,
I have a 5hp compressor and I understand the max pressure is 175 psig but there is probably a higher instantaneous pressure in the head due to piston velocity before the valves open. I was hoping someone had some documentation on what those numbers might be and how much higher they are than the max of 175. I need to make sure my application is safe.

The internal pressure of a compressor is dependent on the pressure drop across the discharge valves. That pressure drop varies depending on the type of valve, the fluid being compressed and other variables. Only the compressor manufacturer can provide you with the kind of information you are looking for.
There is another factor that enters into the internal pressure of a compressor. It is caused by the pulsations generated by the compressor and these pulsations can actually produce a standing wave with pressures much higher than the pressure indicated at the discharge. Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Tx has a great deal of information and experience with this type of problem.
You also need to know if the 175 psi is a pressure limit or if it is possible that you can exceed the mechanical limits of the compressor at pressures below the 175 psi. This type of failure is usually tied to a rating known as "rod load".
