PEX Plumbing Part Three: Couplings And Fittings
Hopefully you will have by now read my introductory PEX manual. This information is intended to go into greater detail of the connectors employed to install PEX. For evaluation, typical PEX measurements are 3/8", 1/2", three/4" and 1". I observed for my residential application I utilised one/2" and three/4" with only a couple of three/8" connectors for immediate connections to toilet and faucet.
Couplings: PEX to PEX connection. These are employed to carry on a run, transform sizes, turn tight corners and split off into branches. The 1st standard coupling is a straight connector. The PEX is connected to equally ends with either a standard crimp or "cinch" crimp. (Crimps will be covered in my next information.) These are also available to change the size of the PEX being employed. Picture one/2" on a single finish and 3/4" on the other. I utilised this variety of reducer to attach my main cold h2o line to my exterior faucets. I did not want to obtain comprehensive new exterior faucet assemblies. This kind of piece is also accessible as a "STOP". One stop is completely closed. These are accessible in brass or plastic, the plastic predominately becoming employed to check pressure. I utilised the "STOP" pieces in the region in which I will finally be including a 2nd bath. That way my lines are already in location and if I ever quit playing with this stuff I might get that bathroom carried out!
Elbows or 90'S: While PEX is versatile and can bend and round corners devoid of problems there are occasions when a 90 degree change is needed. Same principal for connecting as straight couplings.
"Tee's": These look just like their name. They are used for dropping a branch off of a line. There are two simple sorts, 1, all ends are the very same dimension. TWO, two ends are 1 dimension with 1 bigger or smaller sized. (please see connected photographs) The first photo shows a 3/4" tee. The second shows a couple of variations. three/four x three/4 x one/two and 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/four. These are extremely useful for producing branches in your plumbing and/or minimizing the size of the branch. Not pictured are the variety I employed the most, three/4 x 3/four x 1/2. I employed these to branch off of the major line to a single fixture. Nearly like a manifold. (see next information, to publish shortly)
Fittings: You also want to be ready to connect PEX to faucets, fixtures and present plumbing. PEX to sweat fittings. These fittings are utilized to connect PEX to present copper lines. They are accessible in a a single to one ratio, I.E. one/2" PEX to 1/2" sweat or PEX size with minimizing or enlarging sweat connections. MAKE YOUR SWEAT CONNECTION Very first, AND THEN CONNECT YOUR PEX. This is a 1/2' PEX, 1/2" sweat fitting. For an application see my pictures. This is a connection to my present kitchen sink copper. I employed this because I did not want to redo the dishwasher connection. PEX to pipe thread connections: These are utilized when connecting to existing galvanized pipe or immediately to fixtures. Initial, MPT refers to male pipe thread and FIP refers to a female pipe thread. The MPT is threaded on the exterior and screws into the female connection. The FIP is threaded on the within and screws onto the male connection. (I feel you get the notion.) They also arrive in a variety of measurements as required and you should make your threaded connection 1st. Swivel fittings: Swivel fittings are the same fundamental variety as pipe thread but allow you to twist on/tighten right after the PEX is linked. They are excellent for connecting to present fixtures. They appear in a brass or a plastic kind swivel.
Shut-offs: A single of my favored components of PEX plumbing. Shut-offs also arrive in a selection of sizes and designs. At this level you will will need to go to the photograph link to see the shut-offs and applications. The very first image of the shut-offs exhibits my hot water connection to the bathroom sink. It has a PEX connection on 1 stop and a three/8" male thread connector on the other. This manufactured a regular connection to the sink supply. Please ignore the hole in the wall, I am. Someday I will get all around to fixing it but it is below the bathroom sink. This is also wherever I broke my ribs hoping to get rid of the final of the old galvanized plumbing. Eight weeks later the ribs are better and I am hopefully a bit smarter. The 2nd photograph in this set shows a ball variety shut-off that I utilised correct off of my water major. Photo 3 in this set shows the variety of shut-off I utilized in my manifold assembly. These allow me to shut off every single branch of my plumbing individually for service or repair. This function is a single of the good reasons I have appear to adore the PEX program. With all of the over you may possibly assume that I have covered PEX fittings but I have not integrated anything at all about "Push it" or "Shark bite" fittings. Because I have not utilised these myself I will not go into them right here. They tend to be far more pricey but get rid of the want for crimping your connections. There is a great amount of information available on the internet. You can also find videos of how PEX connections are produced. For an essential safety issue, please see my manual on electrical grounding.

how can you tell the diffrence between black pipe thread and electrical conduit thread?
I'm taking a test tomorow.
All pipe threads are tapered so that as they are tightened they "jam" together to assure a pressure tight connection.
