I recently replaced a set of 30000 btu gas logs with a free standing, 30000 btu Gas Stove. The gas logs were fed off of a 3/8 copper line. The stove has an 1/2 npt port, with a provided flex line that ends with a 3/8 SAE Flair nut. Its no issue to connect the original copper line to the 3/8 SAE flair nut, using a simple 3/8 SAE male Flair union. The question I have is this, the Gas stove directions state that I need to use a 1/2 Black Iron Line then plumb it into the supply line, to insure enough volume. I work somewhat in the plumbing ind. With the line being cut down to a 3/8 SAE no matter how I plumb it, I don't see the need to re-plumb then to reduce the 1/2 Black Steel down to the 3/8 SAE. I do want to have the full flow and all, but don't see why that would make a difference. Can anyone in the Plumbing/HVAC work force who would have experience with this, tell me if this would in fact reduce the flow and effect the operations of this stove.

It would really depend on the length of the pipe run and how many bends there are in it and the fact that the gas logs was piped up with 3/8 doesnt mean it was correct in the first place. You should end up with 14.7 inches water column at the stove with the stove running so the longer the pipe and the more bends the more resistance in the pipe the more pressure drop. As you work in the plumbing industry it shouldnt be too difficult to find someone to do a pipework calculation for you.
