Make Your Own Healing Salve

With a few simple ingredients you can make your own salve as a substitute for petroleum jelly, lip balm, a skin soother and other applications. Products that contain petroleum are not a healthy skin application in my opinion.

BASIC SALVE
Warm two ounces of oil on a low heat and add a couple of ounces of beeswax (grated) to the oil to make a basic salve. The wax should be stirred into the warm oil until it melts and is completely blended. The blended oils can be stored in a short glass jar. As this cools it thickens. Mixing small amounts allows you to use the salve without needing to add preservatives for long term storage.

PERSONALIZE IT
Use your favorite herbs to produce an infused oil to be used as an ingredient in your salve. My preference is to blend olive oil and coconut oil together for an infusion. This reduces the amount of beeswax required for your salve as coconut oil solidifies (below 76ºF) as it cools to room temperature. Additionally, your salve will be enhanced by coconut oil’s anti-microbial characteristics.

After you’ve added beeswax you can adding other ingredients.
* A capsule of vitamin E oil increases the beneficial properties of your salve for the skin. Prick a hole into the gelatin capsule and press the contents into your beeswax and oil blend.
* One half teaspoon of raw honey will act as a preservative and is also soothing to the skin.
* For fragrance add several drops of your favorite essential oil. When making your selection, read the label carefully as not all essential oils are meant to be applied to the skin.**
* Add about 7 drops of tea tree oil to act as a preservative. Be mindful of the strength of your tea tree oil. Some brands are stronger than others and can be irritating, so don’t overdo.**

That’s all there is to it. Create your own combination of pleasing scents and properties. Small baby food jars can be filled and decorated as thoughtful gifts. Add your own special flavoring for lip balm or special herbs to relieve aches and pains. I find that limiting my herbal blends to 2 to 4 ingredients works well. I choose herbs with properties that complement each other.

KAY’S MUSCLE & SKIN SOOTHING SALVE
Use the heat method to infuse extra virgin olive oil with dried goldenrod leaves and flowers. Let oil heat in a double-boiler over simmering water for 3 to 4 hours or longer. Use approximately 2 cups of oil and 1 cup of herb. Strain the herbs and place the infused oil into a glass jar (quart size), stirring another cup of coconut oil into the jar until melted.

The next day, infuse this oil (the blended olive and coconut oil) with another cup of goldenrod and a cup of dried plantain, allowing this to heat over simmering water for another 3 to 4 hours or more.

Once more filter the herbs and discard. In each of your small jars, place two Tbsp. beeswax (if you are using a jelly jar, make those large Tbsps), ½ tsp raw honey and one or two capsules of vitamin E oil (break open the capsules and squeeze the contents into the container). Then add your infused oil, stir until the wax and other ingredients are well blended and melted. Should you have difficulty getting the wax to melt, place the lid tightly on the jar and set it into the still hot water in your double boiler, warming it gently.

Allow the jars to cool once the ingredients are blended. This should set up to a nice salve texture. Inflammation, itching, pain and bleeding are all eased by plantain, a styptic. An antiseptic, Goldenrod also helps soothe sore muscles, strains and sprains. I enjoy the smooth texture and penetration of this salve when applied topically. I would feel comfortable using this on chapped lips, baby’s bottom, scrapes, rashes or blemishes. Painful muscles and inflamed soft tissue respond well to frequent application of this salve.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Should your salve be too hard, simply warm it and add more oil, blend and allow it to cool again. If you find your salve to be too soft, re-warm it adding more beeswax. Once it returns to room temperature, check to see if the consistency is right.

What Filter?

What oil filter does my sister need?

Car: Vauxhall Corsa

Model: 1.3 design, CDTi

Year: 04 plate.

My knowledge of cars is non-existent.
She needs to know where she can find out about what filter she needs.
She has searched her driver manual, the vauxhall website and had a brief search online with no joy.
Does anyone know a site which would let you know?

Any help would be grand. Thanks.

Your car parts store will have a book with that information. The book is normally located near the filters.
