Does this save Gas? - If you drive with only a half tank of gas do you burn less gas?
* I DRIVE a hyundai accent usually with a half tank of gas and i don't notice much difference in savings. Is there any truth to this? I also keep 20 litres (1/2 tank) of gas in a gas can in my trunk should i run low on gas due to this method of saving gas.
Gasoline weighs in at about 7 pounds per gallon, so you save weight of about 35 pounds or so over a full tank. So in THAT respect, you DO save a little by carrying less weight. The thing is, it is NOT significant compared to an average adult male at 180 pounds. Where did you hear this nonsense? If you carry a can of gas, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having half tank in the first place? After all, whether the gas is in a separate can or IN the tank, the weight is STILL there? Whether the gas is in the tank or not does not change the gas mileage, but the amount of weight in the car DOES. Think loaded truck or unloaded truck. Commercial aircraft do this all the time. They carry only enough fuel to get to their destination plus a small amount extra on margin for safety. They routinely fly with part full tanks. Why carry more fuel than they will need to get from point A to point B? Every pound counts in the air, but not so much in your car.
