what to doo with white wire with 240v 3-wire air compressor?
Im wiring in a 18-Amp air compressor. I have four 10 gage wires coming from the breaker box. Black/Red/Green/White. The Air compressor only has a place for the Black/Red/Green wires.
So what should I do with the white wire??
Also I messed up and bought all 1/2" conduit. The wire O.D is just slightly larger. Can I remove the four wires from the main insulation so it can fit through the conduit? All 4 wires have their own black/red/green/white insulation. And it will be completely in PVC conduit
**Responce to first answer**
I don't believe it is romex wire. I believe it is called SOOW 10/4 "Portable power cable" I don't know a great deal about wiring so that could be the same as romax wire. I thought romex wire is solid copper with a bare copper ground.
Could you explain a little more about why it should not be ran through conduit? Im guessing it is a heat issue? If It can't be in conduit, What else are you to do with it?
That's a 240V no return circuit. It gets all it's power from the 240V, it has no "common" or "white" or "return" wire. It has two hot legs and a ground. That's it. Do whatever you want to with the white, just don't hook it up to anything (you could create an alternate route to ground and that would be bad).
-----------------
Forgot about your second question, sorry. You shouldn't be running NM-B Romex in conduit to begin with. It should all be THHN or THWN. Little late now though...so, who cares?
